What is the best purchase you have ever made?
The best purchase? Our house.
After crashing and burning out of the US white-collar industrial complex, I lost everything, including the big house on the hill with the two-car garage.

And if I’m being honest, I resented leaving that home. We had raised three kids there. I had what I thought were my best years

Old and sick, I arrived at our new home on a cold winter day, and I hated it.
Then something happened. The weather warmed, and I slowly did as well. It was the yard that got me. The old barn on the alley, a garage built when cars knew, a grove of aspens, a windbreak of giant pine trees, and a patio to die for.
I have added a greenhouse and garden, and have begun tending a very large yard. When the aspen grove was infected with black fungus, I worked hard to save it and succeeded.

Now I am dealing with dying pines, trees probably planted when the house was built in the 1880s. Sometimes they just get old, but I have my eye on a couple of blue spruces at the local nursery.
Someone has cared for this plot of land for over 140 years. Now it is my turn.

Now paid for, it’s a cozy place. It’s no house on the hill. But I am happier for it.
